The government was planning for evacuation in early 1939, nine months before war started. The following letters were sent to households explaining the evacuation scheme and also to advise them that council officials would be conducting a survey of households in preparation for war and the need to evacuate children from areas at risk.

By April 1939, the survey had been completed and evacuation plans had been prepared, the following letter was sent to households to thank them for their co–operation.

The following letter was sent in June 1939 to households who had volunteered to house evacuees, thanking them for their help.

As well as a letter of thanks, households who had volunteered to house evacuees were given a card which they could display in their window to show that they were helping the war effort by taking in evacuees.
